Nursery Inspiration

Now that we know we're having a girl I am getting lots of questions about how we are doing the nursery. I thought I would share some of my inspiration. Most of these pictures are pinned from my Pinterest account. If you want to see any of the other stuff I want to do for Emerson, my account is lewilliams81. Look me up. :) You can also click at the bottom and see the source of each picture.

Let's start from the main focus...This is the very first baby-related thing I found. I searched Etsy for a vinyl tree pretty much as soon as I found out I was pregnant, and instantly fell in love with this one. While the tweety birds and owls are absolutely adorable, we are not "theme" people. We're really using this to coordinate colors and patterns through out the room. I will put the birds and owls on the tree, but it won't be a running theme in her room. We're hoping to get the wall color as close to this as possible. I LOVE the grown-up-yet-whimsical look of it all. After all, we'll be the ones spending the most time in her room. If I were surrounded by cartoon characters every time I went in there, I wouldn't like it.

Excuse the poor picture quality, but I didn't take this thinking of using it on the ole blog. It was taken as just a reference. This is our crib choice. There's a local sawmill company that makes furniture, and Justin's parents saw this crib there. We went back and forth between white and a dark wood stain, but once we found out she was a she we were sold on the white. I love that it's simple and classic. Since it's not from a cheap-o place it's really sturdy and will last though the transitions of baby to toddler.

We're also not doing your typical changing table. We're hoping for a dresser like this one from Ikea, or a very similar one from the sawmill place. Again, it has a classic look that will last. We'll have a changing pad on top that matches with the leaves on her tree.

L-O-V-E this bookshelf!!!! (Although we'll have to rethink the color) I think it is completely adorable. Justin found a great alternative yesterday that is simply a branch stretching across the wall. I couldn't find the same picture to post, but you get the idea. I think it is so unique and fun.

How's this for cute storage?!?! Being a reading teacher, I will of course make sure she's loaded with books. I think this is such a cute way for her to be able to access them when she gets older.

Well, you may notice that one piece is missing. I'll break my mother-in-law's heart a little more by saying it again: We're not doing baby bedding. Yep, I'm a rebel. Here's my thinking. The American Academy of Pediatrics has recently come out very strongly against parents using crib bumpers for any age due to suffocation risks and kids using them as stepping stones to crawl (aka fall) out of their crib. Before you give me the "my kids used a bumper and were perfectly fine" speech I've heard 10,000 times, I am choosing to be cautious. I know that 98% of the time things might be fine. I don't think I could ever forgive myself if I were in that 2%. We are choosing to register for a breathable bumper (a mesh fabric), but I'm even a little unsure if I will use it. Surely most folks know by now that you're not supposed to put a baby in with loose blankets, so what's the point of having the little quilt? Basically, I'd be paying upwards of $100 for a dust ruffle and a bunch of stuff I can't use. Therefore, we're choosing to only use crib sheets, swaddling blankets, and sleep sacks at this point. Call me crazy. :)

I'll post more as we work on her room and get things done. I just wanted to share the inspiration for our little girl's room.

Love the whole thing! So cute! Love both book storage ideas. I hate bumper pads. We used to use them and they freaked me out. Manning would always nestle his face against it. Liberty was our first baby they gave us the no bumper pad or loose stuff suggestion. We were happy to see that even though it's what we'd already chosen. Liberty's still in a travel crib with mesh sides in our room. I love it because it seems so safe. So I'm definitely with you. :)
